US facial product comparison; manufacturer ingredient lists checked November 7, 2026 (JST).

The short verdict

Consider Toleriane Purifying if you want a foaming facial wash explicitly positioned for normal-to-oily skin, with glycerin, niacinamide and ceramide NP. Consider Neutrogena Ultra Gentle Daily if you want the current fragrance-free, CICA-containing foaming formula marketed for sensitive skin. Neither is an automatic winner for acne-prone skin. Your own tolerance matters more than a headline ingredient or a checker score.

Formula scope: the current US manufacturer page identifies a fragrance-free foaming formula with CICA. Older fragranced bottles have different ingredients. This comparison describes that current formula, not every older bottle still in circulation. [1, 2]

What actually differs in the formulations?

These rinse-off formulas combine cleansing agents with glycerin, but the surfactant blends differ. Toleriane lists coco-betaine near the start and disodium cocoyl glycinate later. Neutrogena lists cocamidopropyl betaine and lauryl glucoside near the start, alongside other cleansing agents later in the list. Ingredient names alone cannot establish which finished cleanser will feel gentler or remove more makeup on your skin.

Toleriane's niacinamide and ceramide NP distinguish it from the current Neutrogena list, which does not name either ingredient. Conversely, Neutrogena lists centella asiatica extract, the CICA ingredient highlighted on its page. A ceramide-containing wash and a botanical-containing wash are different formulation approaches, not proof that one delivers better results.

Current ingredient-screening results

Recalculated with the existing site rules on the US manufacturer lists checked November 7, 2026 (JST). These are ingredient-list screens, not clinical or individual safety assessments.

Screen La Roche-Posay Toleriane Purifying Foaming Cleanser Neutrogena Ultra Gentle Daily Cleanser
Fungal-acne ingredient screen No commonly flagged ingredients No commonly flagged ingredients
Pore-clogging ingredient screen Low; no ingredients rated 3+ found Low; no ingredients rated 3+ found
Pregnancy ingredient screen No commonly flagged ingredients No commonly flagged ingredients

A flag count is not a ranking of finished products. No matches means only no commonly flagged ingredients under these rules, not that a product is safe. Screens do not diagnose fungal acne, predict breakouts, or establish pregnancy safety; rinse-off use, concentration and individual response are not resolved. A pore-screen category is not a clinical risk estimate. Ask your doctor about the exact product, especially during pregnancy. Read how we check ingredients.

Both formulas list PEG-120 methyl glucose dioleate, but the existing rule set does not flag that complete ingredient name. This is a limitation of pattern-based screening, not evidence of clinical suitability.

Who might prefer each?

Toleriane may fit better if you prefer an oily-skin-oriented foaming wash and specifically want niacinamide plus ceramide NP in that cleansing step. It is also the clearer choice if you want to avoid centella extract specifically: it is not named in this formula.

Neutrogena may fit better if you want its current sensitive-skin-positioned, fragrance-free CICA formula and have already tolerated that version. Check the physical ingredient panel rather than assuming an older “Ultra Gentle Daily” bottle is identical. If you are deliberately avoiding niacinamide, it is not listed in the current formula.

Introduce one new product at a time. Persistent stinging, rash or worsening irritation is a reason to stop and seek professional advice, not to keep washing more often.

Useful questions

Does the Neutrogena cleanser contain fragrance?

The current US page says fragrance-free and does not list fragrance. Older fragranced bottles differ, so check your own ingredient panel; these results cover the current US CICA foaming formula, not older bottles or the Hydrating Creamy variant.

Which is better for breakouts?

This ingredient comparison cannot answer that for an individual. Neither current list names salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide, and no independent head-to-head testing was reviewed. Choose for cleansing comfort rather than expecting either to clear acne.

Can I rely on the pregnancy screen?

No. “No commonly flagged ingredients” means no matches in this ingredient-list screen, not pregnancy clearance. Ask your doctor about the exact bottle and your medical circumstances.
